Mercer Island High School to present ‘Big Love’ as winter play

The Mercer Island High School drama department will present its winter play “Big Love,” with performances on Jan. 26, 27, 28 and Feb. 2, 3 and 4 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

“Big Love” was written by Charles L. Mee, and is based on the Greek drama, Aeschylus’ “The Suppliants.” The production tells the story of 50 brides who run away from their wedding day. They find refuge in a villa in Italy. As these women sort through their present and future lives, the grooms arrive to shake up their world and force them to confront their hopes, desires, fears and refusal to lose their identities for romance and love.

“Though at times funny, this is a dark examination of gender politics, marriage, domestic violence and love,” said Daniela Melgar, MIHS drama teacher/director. “No matter what time period, the questions this play raises continue to be relevant. And as we find through the course of the play, there are no easy answers in love.”

Presale tickets for “Big Love” are $10 and can be purchased from members of the cast or online. Tickets at the door are $15. Due to mature language, this production is recommended for audiences 14 years and older.
