BIKE/CAR COLLISION: At 3:05 p.m. police responded to a report of a car striking a cyclist at the intersection of 85th Avenue S.E. and E. Mercer Way. According to the police report, a 29-year-old Kirkland man driving a 2005 Audi slowed on E. Mercer Way but did not signal his intent to turn right onto 85th Avenue S.E. The cyclist, a 45-year-old Mercer Island man, attempted to pass the car on the right as it turned onto 85th Avenue S.E. “The cyclist was ejected from his bicycle and suffered abrasions to his extremities,” according to the report. A Mercer Island aid crew treated the cyclist at the scene. The officer issued citations to the driver and the cyclist.

Aug. 25

DUI: At 3:04 a.m. a patrol officer stopped a 2005 Honda Civic for expired tabs in the 8300 block of eastbound I-90. The driver, a 29-year-old Bellevue woman, admitted to “having a couple of beers,” and failed a voluntary breathalyzer test with a sample of .096. The driver was taken into custody, processed at MIPD and released. Her car was towed by lbsen towing.

Aug. 26

FOUND: At 9:56 a.m. a bike was turned into the MIPD. The one-speed bike is “hand-painted gold” with “painted pink rims.”

DRUGS: At 2:28 p.m. a patrol officer pulled over the driver of a 1987 Chevrolet Caprice for “failing to stay within its designated lane of travel” in the 5400 block of Island Crest Way. The driver, a 19-year-old Mercer Island woman, appeared “very disoriented,” but denied drinking alcohol. She voluntarily took a breathalyzer test and failed. After the test, she told the officer she’d taken Xanax. The officer searched her purse and found a full syringe, which the woman said “was loaded with heroin.” The officer also found a piece of heroin stuck in the woman’s shirt. The car was impounded, pending a search warrant. The woman was arrested for “DUI-drugs,” and taken to the Redmond Police Department to be evaluated by a drug expert and later to Overlake Hospital for a blood draw. She was booked into the King County Jail.

Aug. 27

DUI: At 1:28 a.m. an officer on patrol stopped the driver of a 1996 GM Sierra for a broken license plate light in the 4200 block of Island Crest Way. The driver admitted to “consuming two beers,” voluntarily submitted to a breathalyzer test, and failed with a sample of .113. The driver, a 26-year-old Des Moines, Wash., man, was arrested and his car was turned over to a sober friend. The man was processed at the MIPD and released.

FOUND: At 8:15 a.m. the MIPD received a Huffy Manitoba 18-speed bike.

RUNAWAY: At 2:55 p.m. a Mercer Island mother reported her 16-year-old son missing since 6:35 p.m. the day before. She’d checked his “local hangouts” without success.

BURGLARY: At 10:59 p.m. a resident of the 7600 block of S.E. 40th Street reported he had returned home to find a burglar in his house. The suspect fled the scene with a black iPod, 40D Canon DSLR camera and three camera lenses.

DRUGS: At 7:35 p.m. a 49-year-old Mercer Island man reported “a suspicious vehicle/possible drug activity” at a trailhead near the 7600 block of S.E. 34th Street. A reporting officer smelled “a slight odor of marijuana” after contacting the suspicious vehicle, a 2006 Jeep Cherokee. Inside were three Mercer Island teens and one Bellevue teen. Two teens, 16 and 17 years old, admitted to possessing a small amount of pot and gave it to the officer. They were arrested on-scene, then released to their parents. The other two denied having pot, which the other two teens confirmed.

Aug. 28

ACCIDENTAL FALL: At 1:55 a.m. an 18-year-old Islander reported that a Mercer Island man fell from the balcony of a home located in the 7700 block of 27th Street. Another 18-year-old Islander witnessed the fall. According to the police report, the man may have been drinking. He was transported to Harborview with a head injury, and his parents were notified of the incident.
