The Rotary Club of Mercer Island welcomed its new club president, Bruce Fletcher, on July 1.

The Mercer Island Rotary Club is a volunteer organization of 130 members that meets at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center each Tuesday from noon to 1:30 p.m. The club is busy giving back to the community with annual grants that help fund several community service projects.

Fletcher is the parks and recreation director for the city of Mercer Island.

“I am so honored to lead a group of caring members who make a positive difference in our community,” he said.

The club provides volunteers for many projects, including tutors for elementary students, feeding the homeless, and helping Rotary First Harvest provide fresh produce to local food banks.

This year will mark the 45th annual Rotary Half Marathon, which will attract over 4,000 runners to the Island this spring. The event raises funds and awareness to fight colon cancer and helps fund many grants to local charitable organizations.
