A Mercer Island home south of the I-90 bridge was burglarized sometime during the night on Monday, March 11, in the 2600 block of 60th Avenue S.E.

The 37-year-old tenant of a mother-in-law apartment on the property interrupted the burglary when he heard someone trying to enter his apartment.

The tenant woke up at 3:22 a.m. when he heard someone attempting to unlock his front door, according to the police report. When he looked down from the loft, he saw the door open. He yelled, the door closed, and he went downstairs but saw no one outside.

Police responded to the incident and woke up the property owner in the main house. The 61-year-old resident did not think the main house had been burglarized, and he went back to bed, according to the police report. When he was awake an hour later, he got up for a glass of grapefruit juice and discovered that the container of juice had been stolen out of his refrigerator. He then noticed that several drawers in his wife’s office, next to the kitchen, had been opened and rummaged through.

The burglars entered through two unlocked dining room doors. The house alarm was not activated that night.

$2,800 in ruby earrings and precious stones from Pakistan were stolen, but sensitive financial information, several checkbooks and currency remained untouched. A drawer containing various keys was also rifled through, and keys to the resident’s office, house and apartment might have been stolen out of it.

Police searched the property with a K-9 unit. Fingerprints were lifted from the scene.
