Parent volunteers needed to serve on district committee

Parent volunteers are needed to serve on the district’s Instructional Materials Committee (IMC). The IMC helps recommend and adopt instructional materials that align to the state and district learning standards. The committee membership includes staff, students and parents.

The committee meets three to four times a year, from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesdays. Parents may volunteer for a term of up to three years. Please note that not all volunteers will be selected to serve on the committee because its membership must reflect the students the district serves.

For more information about the Instructional Materials Committee, see Board Policy 2019.

To inquire about serving as an IMC member, please contact Vanessa Adams, Learning Services Department, at 206-236-3330, by Aug. 5.

MISD posts 2016-2017 kindergarten start dates and information

For the first time, all-day kindergarten is fully funded by the state, making it tuition free for families. Concurrently, the Mercer Island School District (MISD) is placing greater emphasis on child/family transition to kindergarten.

To prepare kindergarten students and families for the 2016-2017 school year, parent-student-teacher conferences will occur during the first two days of school, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. The first full day of school for all kindergarten students will be Friday, Sept. 2.

The conference goal is to share information about the student/family interests and culture. It will also help families get to know their kindergarten teachers. MISD is “excited about this opportunity,” to get to know each of its kindergarten students before regular classes start.

In consideration of child care challenges, the district wants to work with your schedules. If you have a conference-date preference day and time, please go to the WaKIDS Kindergarten Parent-Student-Teacher Conference Preference Form. The district will do its best to find times that work for everyone.

For more detailed information, see the parent letter that was sent to kindergarten families on June 30.
