An unidentified man entered a business through an unlocked back door in the 3000 block of 78th Avenue S.E. sometime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4. The suspect stole a woman’s wallet and used the victim’s debit card at a nearby service station, according to the police report. The wallet contained $200 in cash, other credit cards and ID. The suspect’s vehicle was a black Mercedes-Benz. Police are investigating the case.

During the month of May, the Mercer Island Police Department reported 11 arrests and 1,066 total calls for service, with two burglaries, 12 thefts, three vehicle thefts, seven cases of identity theft, and one assault.
There were 20 traffic accidents, three hit-and-run accidents, two DUI accidents, one DUI arrest, and five people injured. Police issued 234 total citations, including 67 parking tickets.

Malicious mischief: A speed trailer was pushed over after midnight in the intersection of S.E. 71st Street and 84th Avenue S.E. The top of the speed limit sign was damaged, along with the fender.
The front door handle and lock combination of a residence in the 2200 block of 78th Avenue S.E. was damaged by an unknown suspect sometime between 6:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Fender-bender: A vehicle driven by an 89-year-old man rear-ended a SUV at 7:53 a.m. in the 4800 block of Island Crest Way. Police issued a citation for following too closely. The SUV had slowed for traffic congestion, according to the police report, and the other vehicle was not able to stop in time to avoid a collision. The 18-year-old driver of the SUV reported a sore neck and shoulder. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Purse theft: A 65-year-old woman reported the theft of two purses during the past two months. Her purses contained 12 credit cards, $1,000 in cash, a Social Security check and ID. Construction workers doing work in the home were suspected.
Accident: A Jeep crashed into a house at 2:38 p.m. in the 3900 block of Gallagher Hill Road. Police found the 94-year-old driver inside his vehicle with possible injuries. One of the vehicle’s tires was sheared off and the vehicle was heavily damaged, according to the police report. A carport and fence were also damaged. The driver said that he struck something in his garage while backing into it, then drove forward and struck his neighbor’s adjacent carport, tree and house. One witness was present. The vehicle was removed by a tow truck.

Thrift shop theft: A three-foot maple and glass display case worth $365 was stolen from outside of the Thrift Store overnight at 7710 S.E. 34th Street. A surveillance camera may have captured the incident.
Arrests: A 29-year-old man was taken into custody at 3:35 a.m. on a $10,000 warrant for DUI and driving with a suspended license. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail.
Kirkland police arrested a 35-year-old woman at 9:49 a.m. on a Mercer Island Municipal Court misdemeanor warrant. She was taken to the court and released from custody.
Accident: A collision occurred at 10:04 a.m. in the intersection of S.E. 30th Street and 78th Avenue S.E. when the driver of a minivan pulled out in front of an oncoming vehicle. He was driving with a suspended license and had mistakenly assumed that the other driver had a stop sign, according to the police report. He admitted causing the accident, saying that he was to blame. Police issued a citation for failing to stop or yield. There were no injuries.
