What is wrong with seeking profit?

I have had it with the recent trend to demonize capitalism. What is wrong with seeking a profit? The “American Dream” has brought us countless inventions which we take for granted. The taxes from new businesses have financed the finest infrastructure in the modern world. It has brought us millions of immigrants seeking an environment to realize their dreams, who have made immense contributions to our society. The profits from these businesses have worked their way back into our communities via charitable contributions. These institutions are far more effective at serving the needs of the less advantaged than government bureaucracies. The two biggest contributors to our charitable institutions are business titans Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Altruism is a fine ideal, but it is self-serving incentives that better dictate behavior. Most of us here on MI didn’t study hard to get into good schools, get good grades, work long hours at our jobs or businesses so we could give to charities. Rather, we did it so we could have a better life, give our children a good education, and enjoy some of the luxuries life offers to those who work hard. A positive byproduct of our success is the ability and means to help others.

I challenge the assertion that companies (yes, even insurance companies and oil companies) are blood suckers making obscene profits. Companies can only charge what people will pay. Monopolies are illegal in our country. Therefore, either a company has a product that is in high demand with little supply, or supply hasn’t caught up with demand. Competition ensues. New companies enter the market. Efficiencies are achieved. Costs come down. Consumers act. The beauty of our free market system is competition, and choice produces the optimum solution.

So to all of you on MI who have worked hard and honestly to create your wealth, I tip my hat. Thank you for making my life better. Thank you for paying all the taxes you pay. Thank you for contributing to our charitable organizations. Let us hope your children will be able to live in an environment where they have the incentive and infrastructure to do the same.
