A woman stole an estimated $300 worth of groceries from the south end QFC at 7:45 p.m., Dec. 4. Police obtained video surveillance from the store showing the woman, in her 30s, pushing a full cart out of the store with a child. There was also a video of the woman and her child in a back aisle. The suspect left in a gray Honda Accord, and an employee recovered the cart and $47.25. Two witnesses were present.

Dec. 1

Arrest: Police arrested a 36-year-old man at 1:09 a.m. in the 9600 block of eastbound I-90 after a license plate checked showed a report of sale from May. The driver was driving with a suspended license and five counts of failing to appear in court. He signed a waiver of impound and was later released at the MIPD.

Dec. 2

DUI: Police stopped a vehicle for changing lanes without signaling in the 8600 block of S.E. 40th Street and arrested the driver at 1:52 a.m. The driver, a 52-year-old Island man, had an odor of intoxicants and failed standard sobriety tests. Police took him to the ground after he physically resisted arrest. Photographs were taken of items in the man’s pockets showing names of multiple restaurants and lounges, for evidence. The man was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Dec. 3

DUI: Police stopped a vehicle for speeding 14 mph over the limit and arrested the driver, a 48-year-old Mercer Island man, at 12:55 a.m. in the 6300 block of S.E. 24th Street. The driver admitted consuming alcohol. He failed field sobriety tests, and his vehicle was impounded. He was later released to his sister.

Accident: A vehicle did not stop for a red light in the intersection of S.E. 36th Street and East Mercer Way and struck a van at 9:30 a.m. The van, which had the right of way on a green light, sped up to avoid being hit, but was struck in the side at the rear wheel. Neither vehicle braked, and there were no skid marks. Police cited the driver at fault, a Mercer Island woman in her 70s, for failing to stop at the red light. Her vehicle was towed.

Dec. 4

DUI: A Mercer Island police unit working a DUI emphasis patrol in downtown Kirkland arrested an intoxicated Bothell man, 27, at 2:10 a.m. and found the driver had tampered with his ignition interlock device.

Liquor violation: A Mercer Island woman reported a 17-year-old male lying in the street in front of her residence at 6:34 a.m. in the 3600 block of 86th Avenue S.E. Police found that he was heavily intoxicated. Aid from the fire department treated the young man, and he was released to his father.

Car prowl: An unknown suspect broke through the front window of a Nissan Pathfinder between 12 and 12:30 p.m. at Luther Burbank Park, 2040 84th Avenue S.E., and stole a GPS unit, leather purse, cell phone, vehicle and house keys, bank cards, ID and a U.S. passport card.

Burglary: A 70-year-old woman reported in the afternoon that someone stole a purse from her home in the 4000 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The purse contained $430 in cash. There was no evidence of any forced entry, and no other items were stolen. The woman cancelled her credit cards.

Dec. 6

Mail theft: Three thank-you cards were stolen out of a woman’s mailbox in the 4200 block of Shoreclub Drive sometime after 6:30 p.m., Dec. 5. The mail was gone by 7 a.m. in the morning.

Vehicle vandalized: Someone vandalized a BMW overnight in the 3000 block of 81st Place S.E. The driver’s side doors had deep scratches in the metal. The vehicle belonged to a Port Orchard man who did not know of any suspects.

Dec. 7

Fraud: Someone “washed” multiple Mercer Island Farmers Insurance checks in November and tried to cash them at various banks, which took the checks and did not give money to the suspects. Copies of the washed checks contain possible suspect information. The fraud was reported at 2:13 p.m.

Traffic offenses: A witness saw an 83-year-old Seattle man driving unsafely, with a suspended license, in a Chevrolet Malibu around 5:40 p.m. in the 4400 block of West Mercer Way. The driver hit mailboxes and left the scene. The vehicle stopped from severe damage, and was later towed. No drugs or alcohol were factors in the accident. The driver was confused. After being taken into protective custody, he was released to his daughter.

Accident: A driver ran a red light while talking on a speaker phone and struck a sedan at 8:09 p.m. in the intersection of Island Crest Way and North Mercer Way. The driver of the sedan was exiting westbound I-90 and had a green light. The driver at fault, 24, said she did not notice if the light was red or green.

Dec. 8

Traffic offense: Police stopped a 30-year-old Seattle driver at 12:29 a.m. in the westbound I-90 mid-span for a traffic offense. The suspect was driving with a suspended license. His vehicle was impounded, and he was cited and released.

Accident: A 17-year-old driver was taken to the hospital and cited for reckless driving after striking a tree at a high rate of speed at 1:55 a.m. in the 3200 block of 78th Avenue S.E. His vehicle hit a curb and went onto a sidewalk before hitting the tree, then rotated 180 before stopping. The right side of the vehicle was destroyed and missing. Injuries included facial cuts and scrapes.

Arrest: Police arrested a 43-year-old Mercer Island man on a felony Department of Corrections warrant at his residence at 10:33 a.m. in the 6000 block of East Mercer Way. He was booked into the King County Jail.

Fraud: An unknown suspect tried to withdraw $4,000 from a Mercer Island man’s Chase Bank account at 12 p.m. in San Dimas, Calif., at a Chase Bank branch. The man was in the Los Angeles area at the time and contacted local police, but was told to report the incident to Island police.

Car prowl: An unknown suspect broke into a Buick Rendezvous parked outside of St. Monica Church in the 4300 block of 88th Avenue S.E. sometime between 6:45 and 9:30 p.m. The thief broke through the front passenger window and stole purse out from under the seat, then tried to use a bank card after the theft.
