Beverly P. Smith

Beverly P. Smith passed away peacefully on April 18, 2016 at the age of 88. Born and raised in Long Beach California, Beverly was the older of two daughters of Dr. LeRoy Pitman and Dorothy Geoghegan Carpenter. She attended the University of Oregon, graduated with honors with a BS in education and a minor in science. She married Hans Martin Smith Jr, a Seattle native, and lived 50 years on Mercer Island. Following Martins passing, Beverly spent 14 years in Bellevue, dividing her time between Bellevue and a home on Hood Canal. Beverly is survived by her children Sally A. Smith, Hans Martin Smith III (Mickey), Bryan L. Smith, and Gregory Broderick Smith; 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Beverly loved the outdoors – fishing, mushroom hunting, clam digging, and berry picking but her true passion was gardening. She attended BCC and received a degree in landscape design spending many happy years creating beautiful gardens at her homes. She was active for many years in the University of Washington Arboretum.

She was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed mysteries; she was an excellent writer and spent hundreds of hours documenting our family history. She had a deep love for animals and always had a favorite pet by her side. Beverly had a quick wit, was a natural organizer, and extremely creative. In her later years she started a Red Hat group at the Pacific Regent in Bellevue, hosted Halloween costume parties, song fests and fun Red hat luncheons around the city. Anything to have fun.

As a young girl she spent summers with her grandparents in Eastsound on Orcas Island. Beverly often reminisced about how she and her sister ran through the forest pretending to be woodland fairies. Today Beverly is happy and running through the woods. We love you Mom and will always hold you in our hearts.

A private service will be held for immediate family. Remembrances may be made in Beverly Smith’s honor to the Arboretum Foundation.
