Ronald Theodore Schaps | Obituary

Ronald Theodore Schaps, of Mercer Island, WA, passed away peacefully in his home on June 16, 2023 at the age of 88.

Ron was born on April 14th, 1935 to Theodor and Louise Schaps in Chicago, IL. After graduating from Francis Parker Private High School, he went on to get his Bachelor of Science from Lawrence University (1956) and then his Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School (1959).

In 1960, Ron moved to Seattle, WA to join the law firm of Bogle & Gates, eventually becoming a partner and working there until the firm’s dissolution in 1999. During that time, Ron was involved in hundreds of cases appearing before some of the highest courts in the country, including a case tried before the United States Supreme Court in 1988. In 2000, Ron joined Emerald Services as their in-house counsel, a position he held until his retirement in 2015. After retirement, Ron enjoyed spending more time with his family, cheering on his beloved Seahawks, and continuing to stay involved in the practice of law through both consulting and pro-bono work.

Ron was predeceased by his father Theodor, his mother Louise, his older sister Lynne Haydn, and his second wife Nancy Ellis Schaps. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth and his first wife Olinda Haehlen; his five children Kayana (Richard), Steve, Karen, Andrew (Tiffany), and Kevin (Laura); and his 8 grandchildren Riana, Nicholas, Polly, Ella, Ethan, Elin, Christopher, and Cole. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the Mercer Island Youth & Family Services (https://miyfs.org) or to the Nancy Schaps Memorial Grant (https://miptacouncil. membershiptoolkit.com/nancy-schaps-memorial-grant), both of which are organizations that Ron felt strongly about.
