The National Federation of High School Associations (NFHS) has recognized the Mercer Island High School girls golf team for a six-year, 64-match winning streak. The team ranks eighth for consecutive wins and seventh for consecutive unbeaten matches, which includes ties.

“The members of this program should be so proud,” said head coach Don Papasedero. “We remain the single most successful girls’ golf program in Washington state and have just a few years to go to make the national record!”

The longest winning streak of 188 matches is held by Hingham Notre Dame Academy in Massachusetts, an ongoing streak dating back to 2002. The next target for the Mercer Island team is Minnewaska Area High School in Minnesota, which ended a 76-match winning streak after five years in 2011.

“This is an incredible accomplishment and demonstrates an impressive level of consistency for the girls’ golf program at Mercer Island High School,” said Mercer Island School District Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. “The district looks forward to seeing this streak grow in the years to come.”

Since 1920, the NFHS has served its 50 member state high school athletic/activity associations, plus the District of Columbia. The NFHS publishes playing rules in 16 sports for boys and girls competition and administers fine arts programs in speech, theater, debate and music. It provides a variety of program initiatives that reach the 18,500 high schools and over 11 million students involved in athletic and activity programs.
