Baseball suffers first league loss to Interlake

Mercer Island baseball fell to the Interlake Saints 2-1 Monday at Interlake High School, marking the team’s first league loss of the season.

Interlake starting pitcher Steve Emanuels held the Islanders (4-2, 4-1 in KingCo) to one earned run off two hits, while the Saints (3-4) capitalized off four hits to pull out the one-run victory.

Mercer Island had won all four of its league contests heading into Monday’s game, previously taking two from Sammamish (0-6) last week. The Islanders beat the Totems 9-1 on Thursday and 15-1 on Friday, with both games taking place at Sammamish High School.

Mercer Island will get another crack at the Saints at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Interlake High School.

Softball beats Bellevue

The Mercer Island softball team outlasted Bellevue 22-19 Friday at Bellevue High School. Camryn Steiner, Olivia Kane and Lilly Blakey each registered three hits for Mercer Island (2-3, 2-2 in KingCo). Blakey and Ava Upson drove in four runs apiece in the effort.

The Islanders are scheduled to host Juanita at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at South Mercer Playfields.

Boys soccer wins three straight

Mercer Island boys soccer earned its third-straight win, beating KingCo 4A’s Redmond Mustangs 1-0 in their non-league matchup Saturday. Hunter Bauman scored in the 12th minute to put the Islanders on top. Keeper Matt LeProwse recorded three saves in the shutout. The three-game stretch began with a 2-1 victory over reigning 3A state champs Interlake March 22 at MIHS, followed by a 1-0 non-league win over Newport the next evening at Islander Stadium.

Mercer Island (3-0-1, 1-0-0) will host Juanita at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at MIHS.

Girls tennis beats Issaquah, Skyline

Mercer Island girls tennis took back-to-back matches to close the week, beating Issaquah 7-0 Thursday at Issaquah High School. On Friday, the Islanders toppled Skyline 6-1 at MIHS.

The Islanders will host the Interlake Saints at 3:45 p.m. Thursday. Like Mercer Island, the Saints have won their first four matches.
