Water polo begins state title run this week | Sports briefs

The Mercer Island girls water polo team will begin its hunt for the state championship this week.

The Islanders played their first game on Monday afternoon against Kentridge, winning 14-3.

Mikalea Fletcher had three goals in the win, while Stephanie Hammon earned four goals. Jenna Sharman scored twice for the Islanders.

With the win the Islanders advance to the second round at the King County Aquatic Center (KCAC) on Tuesday night for an 8:30 p.m. game.

The state finals will be held Friday afternoon at the Mercer Island Country Club.
