Late putback from Josh Stenberg sends Mercer Island to quarterfinal round.

Mercer Island survived a furious fourth-quarter rally from the Franklin Quakers to edge Franklin 57-56 in their 3A Sea-King district tournament opening round matchup Saturday night at Mercer Island High School.

Mercer Island (17-6) led 45-34 heading into the final period after holding Franklin (15-9) to six third-quarter points. But the Quakers stormed all the way back to take the lead with a 22-point fourth quarter. A late putback from Josh Stenberg with under 30 seconds in regulation gave the Islanders their winning points. Sam Nordale finished with 22 points to lead Mercer Island, while Stenberg scored 15. Keiron Goodwin had 20 points for Franklin, and James Edwards had 15.

Mercer Island will take on the Cleveland Eagles (19-4) in the Sea-King district quarterfinals at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16 at Ingraham High School in Seattle.
