Application forms for the 2013 Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship are now available at the counseling office at Mercer Island High School and online at stanleydunhamfund.com.
Dr. Dunham, the mother of President Barack Obama, was a 1960 graduate of Mercer Island High School and a life-long learner with a strong belief in economic and social equality for people around the world – especially women. After earning a Ph.D in anthropology, she lived and worked in Indonesia helping villagers develop self-sustaining economic programs using their skills in traditional crafts and toolmaking.
The Stanley Ann Dunham Scholarship Fund was established in 2010 by a group of Mercer Islanders and former schoolmates to honor her memory, the education she received at MIHS, her commitment to service, and her kind and generous spirit.
A $5,000 college scholarship will be awarded to a female student currently enrolled in the senior class at MIHS who demonstrates a passion and commitment to the values and goals embodied in the life and work of Stanley Ann Dunham.
The deadline for receipt of all application materials is March 8, 2013. A ceremony will be held in April to award the scholarship to the recipient.
