City and ONE MI continue Community Conversations series

The city of Mercer Island and ONE MI will share strategies on how to provide support when witnessing harassment and racism during a pair of Community Conversations series webinars on Oct. 24 and 26.

How to be an Ally, for teens (geared toward eighth- through 12th-graders), will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Oct. 24, and How to be an Ally, for adults, will occur from 6:30-8 p.m. on Oct. 26.

In the teen training session, leaders will discuss five strategies for intervention – distract, delegate, document, delay and direct – and teach participants how to prioritize their own safety while offering support.

The adult event’s leaders will give participants the tools to safely and confidently intervene the next time they witness harassment in public spaces.

Two more Community Conversations will take place in November and December:

In ‘Disability’ as a Strength from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Nov. 7, Mercer Island resident and Microsoft’s Chief Accessibility Officer Jenny Lay-Flurrie will lead a discussion on how diversity and the inclusion of ability differences enrich communities, workplaces and lives. This event will be held at the Stroum Jewish Community Center and streamed live online.

Mitigating Implicit Bias will feature interactive training and teach people how to understand their own implicit biases in order to begin to undo them. This online session will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. on Dec. 8.
