City completes booster chlorination system project/ Briefs

By recently completing and activating its essential booster chlorination system, the city of Mercer Island now has improved water supply operations and strengthened water quality control, according to a press release.

Partly funded by the local government infrastructure financing program through the Washington State Public Works Board, the project featured Harbor Pacific Contractors construction crews installing new equipment within the reservoir building along with making numerous underground modifications to piping entering and leaving the reservoir.

Planning for the project was a key recommendation following the 2014 boil water advisory.

According to the city, “The booster chlorination system helps ensure that adequate levels of secondary disinfectant, chlorine, is maintained within the city’s water system and can reach every segment in the Island’s water system. Through remote data gathering and monitoring, the system provides city staff with real-time data to track water quality and adjust disinfectant levels within the system.”

The city reminds boaters that King County crews are occupying boat launch parking spaces for infrastructure construction, and there are 21 parking lot spaces available to the public.
