County’s first female firefighter, Pauline Reed dies at 70

Pauline Reed, who resided on Mercer Island for 46 years, died on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Pauline Reed, an Island resident for 46 years, died Aug. 4. She was 70.

Reed had battled ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) for 18 months.

Reed was an active volunteer in the Island community. She was involved with the Mercer Island Preschool Association, an early member of the Mercer Island Country Club, and became the first female firefighter in King County. She was also an EMT. She was active with the National Ski Patrol, Boy and Girl Scouts and the Mercer Island Rowing Association.

She was the longtime owner of State Farm Insurance on the Island.

In 2009 Reed received the Flash Family Inspirational Award. Services will be announced later.
