Illuminating I-90

Charitable candle holder company glassybaby to hold 'White Light' fundraising event early tomorrow morning.

More than a thousand glassybaby candles will illuminate the I-90 bridge between Mercer Island and Seattle early tomorrow morning.

Check-in begins at 4 a.m. on Friday, May 1. The expected 1,500 participants will line the pedestrian walkway, holding special ‘White Light’ candles and posing for a photo before sunrise to promote glassybaby’s non-profit, the ‘White Light’ fund.

The Light the Bridge ticket price, which includes a special edition ‘White Light’ glassybaby candle, is $44. Register online here.

One hundred percent of the Light the Bridge proceeds will be donated to the 23 non-profit organizations that rally the largest teams of ambassadors to be at the early morning event. The first place team will earn $30,000, second place gets $10,000 and $6,000 will go to the third place team.

To date, glassybaby has donated $3.1 million to more than 230 organizations that provide hope and healing to humans, animals and the environment.

Ten percent of every glassybaby sale goes to organizations promoting wellness and healing, such as helping cancer patients with day-to-day needs not covered by basic health insurance, glassybaby director Lee Rhodes and White Light fund executive director David Robinson told local media. Rhodes was diagnosed with cancer for the third time in 1995, and started her company in 2001.

Dogs and children are welcome at Light the Bridge. Participants will park in Mount Baker near the West-end of the I-90 pedestrian walkway at Lake Washington Boulevard South and South Irving Street, and in Mercer Island at the East-end of the walkway, off West Mercer Way and S.E. 24th Street.

On its website, the company recommends carpooling with family and friends to the event, and suggests parking on the streets near the check-in locations.

The company will post signage on both ends of the walkway to advise bicyclists and other pedestrian commuters to add 10-15 extra minutes to their usual commute.

Eastbound I-90 will be reduced to one lane and all eastbound I-90 traffic will be rerouted into the express lanes from 11 p.m. Friday, May 1 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 4. For details, read this I-90 press release.
