The Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has announced Mercer Island Lacrosse and Jim Horgdal among the 2009 Race for the Cure fundraising award winners.

The lacrosse team raised $16,950, more than triple its goal of $5,000. Horgdal — whose son, Graham, is a lacrosse team member — raised $13,300. Horgdal’s contributions came from friends and family, to whom he sent invitations for donations through the Race for the Cure Web site.

“It was easy,” said Horgdal, of raising the funds. “All I had to do was ask, so it was very nice to get support.”

Horgdal walked the 5k with his wife, Kristin, friends and other family members — in support of Kristin, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in March.

“[Kristin] inspired me to get involved with the Race for the Cure because — the main reason is — there are a lot of underserved women out there who don’t have insurance or can’t afford getting the proper testing,” said Horgdal.

The lacrosse team ran the 5k ahead of the walkers for the cause and Kristin Horgdal.
