Mercer Island Rotary announces December students of the month

Mercer Island High School seniors Kayla Varney and Sam Rosenstein were the Mercer Island Rotary Club’s students of the month for December. MIHS teacher Jen McLellen presented the students to the Rotary during a recent meeting.

Varney’s vast community service includes her membership in the National Charity League Evergreen Chapter, Tree House, Special Olympics and Relay for Life. Her honors and awards include the National Honors Society and the Spanish Honors Society. Varney is the captain of the Mercer Island High School varsity softball team.

She is currently also involved in skiing, the Seattle Fastpitch Club, the Mercer Island swim and dive team, Washington DECA and the Anti-Bullying Coalition, where she travels to elementary schools to educate students on bullying and the importance of creating a safe environment.

Varney is the daughter of Petra and Curt.

Rosenstein’s community service includes his involvement in the National League of Young Men that he was a founding member of, Volunteer Outreach in Communities Everywhere and Teen Feed, where he works with others to prepare and serve dinner for residents of the Blaine Center Men’s Homeless Shelter.

Rosenstein is a pitcher/infielder for the Northwest Islanders Select Baseball team, a pitcher/infielder for the MIHS baseball team, a member of the National Honor Society, and participates in intramural basketball and DECA, in which he qualified for the state competition for marketing communications.

Rosenstein is the son of Aaron and Jane.
