The Mercer Island girls soccer team continued its KingCo 3A reign with a solid win over Sammamish High School on Tuesday night. The Islanders beat the Totems, 4-2, in a league game.

Captain Ellen Haas was the first from MI to hit the back of the net 20 minutes into the game off an assist from Rachel Pedreira, which she quickly followed with another Islander goal, assisted by Mary Hill in the 24th minute of the game. Sammamish’s Anna Geldenhuys answered for the Totems 14 minutes later to take the score to 2-1, heading into the halftime break.

Following the break, the Haas/Hill combination struck again for another goal in the 47th minute to lift Mercer Island to a 3-1 vantage point over their opponent. It also marked Haas’ third goal of the evening, a “rare feat,” according to head coach Adam Gervis. Haas has 10 goals so far this season, the leader in the KingCo 3A league.

But Sammamish’s Geldenhuys didn’t let MI freshman goalie Corey Goelz leave the game giving up only one point. Geldenhuys connected with teammate Amanda Bergstrom in the 50th minute to make the score 3-2 heading into the last quarter of the match. Sealing the win was Mary Hill with an unassisted goal in the 64th minute of the game for the final score of 4-2.

On Thursday evening, the Islanders took on Bellevue, winning 2-0. Junior Lauren Frank was responsible for both unassisted goals. The first came in the 25th minute and second after 45 minutes of play, just after halftime.

“Two very tough games this week, both away from the Island,” said Gervis. “Both Bellevue and Sammamish have excellent players and play with passion. The girls finished well and kept their composure.”

The Islanders will look to hold onto their first-place spot in the 3A KingCo league during a game against Liberty on Tuesday, after Reporter deadline, before traveling to Eastside Catholic in a crossover game against the 3A KingCo Metro school.
