The Washington State PTA held its annual Legislative Assembly this past weekend (October 18-19 at the SeaTac Marriott Hotel).  One of the purposes of the assembly was to debate and ultimately vote upon education platform issues which had been identified and ranked by individual school districts.

Surprisingly, the top ranked platform issue identified throughout the State of Washington this year was ‘Background Checks for Gun Purchases’.  Teachers, K-12 students, parents and community members gave this issue an average rank of 4.7 (5 being the highest score) for the entire State of Washington.

Mercer Island School District respondents gave it even a higher average score of 4.9.

The numbers suggest that many throughout Washington­— and on Mercer Island, want background checks for all gun purchases.

“The numbers don’t lie,” said Islander Cornelia Swenson, who has been active with ‘Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.’ “But our politicians simply haven’t gotten the message.”
