Teen asleep at the wheel drives onto rock wall | Mercer Island Police Blotter

An 18-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel in the 2200 block of 60th Avenue S.E. and drove onto a rock wall at 7:15 a.m. on June 5. He said his vehicle bounced off the wall on two wheels and the passenger side then struck the wall after rotating counterclockwise.

The driver was injured and sustained a nose laceration, and his mother took him to a hospital. His vehicle was towed from the scene with extensive damage.

The Mercer Island Police Department reported 1,072 calls for service during the month of May, with 22 thefts, two auto thefts, four burglaries, four cases of simple assault, 15 traffic accidents, five DUI arrests, three hit-and-run accidents, one bicycle/vehicle accident, one pedestrian/vehicle accident, 32 criminal traffic citations, 65 parking citations, and 382 total citations. Police made 29 arrests.

May 17

Stolen bike: A silver Trek mountain bike was stolen outside of a residence in the 4200 block of 89th Avenue S.E. sometime between March 1 and May 1. The theft was reported at 3:52 p.m.

June 2

Theft: A 35-year-old Mercer Island woman reported that a man who she met online stole $19,000 worth of jewelry from her residence in the 7600 block of S.E. 27th Street during one of his visits in April. The suspect, a resident of California or Illinois, stole a yellow gold wedding ring with diamonds, a yellow gold necklace with a heart pendant and diamond flakes, and white gold earrings with a sapphire and diamonds and a matching ring.

Arrest: Police arrested the driver of a vehicle parked under the I-90 bridge at 1:28 p.m. in the 2300 block of 60th Avenue S.E. The driver, a 23-year-old Kirkland woman, had two misdemeanor warrants for theft.

June 3

Boat adrift: A 78-year-old Mercer Island man reported that his boat, a 20-foot Bayliner, was deliberately removed from his boat lift in the 5400 block of East Mercer Way sometime during the past 24 hours. The boat was found drifting at 8 a.m. with an extensively damaged starboard side from colliding with objects.

June 4

Arrest: A 57-year-old woman was arrested at 1:31 a.m. in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way after police stopped her vehicle for a report of sale violation. The suspect was driving with a suspended license and had three counts of Failure To Appear on record. Her sister picked up the vehicle and she was released from the MIPD.

Accident: A vehicle backed into a Subaru SUV at 1:13 p.m. in the Rite Aid parking lot on S.E. 68th Street while the driver of the SUV was waiting for a semi-truck to back up. The collision left a dent in the SUV’s driver-side door. The driver, who was contacted after leaving the scene, was cited for unsafe backing. There was one witness of the collision.

June 5

Fender-bender: A van backed into an unoccupied parked vehicle while attempting to pull out into traffic in the 5600 block of 84th Avenue S.E. at 11 a.m.

June 6

Arrest: Police arrested a 24-year-old man at 12:38 a.m. in the 9600 block of I-90. The suspect, a resident of Edmonds, had two warrants and was driving with a suspended license, without insurance.

Bicycle crash: A bicyclist crashed in the 2700 block of West Mercer Way after reaching for his water bottle and losing control of the bike at 9 a.m. The 41-year-old Renton resident sustained facial abrasions, and his tooth was chipped. An aid unit took the bicyclist home after he declined to be treated at a hospital.

Malicious mischief: A Mercer Island woman, 49, reported that a bench collapsed when someone sat on it outside of Mercy Vet in the 2700 block of 76th Avenue S.E. on June 3. Someone had removed the nuts from the screws of the bench seat. The underside of the bench was damaged.
