The Mercer Island 8U baseball team recently took second place in the Mount Si BPA Classic. The tournament was hosted by the North Bend Knuckleballers in Issaquah.
The Mercer Island combined lacrosse team of seventh and eighth-graders, as well as the high school varsity team, recently won their divisions at the Tahoma Sizzle Lacrosse tournament.
Several teams from Mercer Island made the trek to the annual Spokane Hoopfest competition in late June. From Mercer Island, five teams earned first place finishes in their brackets, while another three took second overall.
On a Saturday morning, while most Mercer Island football players were still asleep, dreaming of astounding runs, passes and tackles, a group of 20 “Gridiron Moms” gathered to learn the finer points of the game from MIHS coaches Brett Ogata and Shane Keck.
The Mercer Island track and field team headed south last week to participate in the 3A state championship meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The Islanders had six individuals competing in the meet after qualifying in the SeaKing district meet. Despite wild weather that included driving rain and high winds followed by patches of warm sun, the team competed well.
Several members of the Mercer Island girls and boys golf teams qualified for the second round of the 3A state tournament in Spokane.

Mercer Island resident Nalani Ogawa recently played in the State Challenge Cup Championship game with the Eastside Soccer Club (EFC) 12U 98 White team.
After winning a stellar win at the district meet on Monday, the Mercer Island girls golf team are busy celebrating not only the district win, but the trip to next week’s state event.
The Friends of Hoop girls basketball team recently traveled to Yakima, to compete in the Best in the West tournament against top teams from Washington and Oregon. The team won the fifth grade championship.
Mercer Islander Jennica McPherson was recently named to the 2011 All Puget Sound region team for her work with the Island Thunder Volleyball Club. She and others in the Seattle area were chosen by their coaches for their athletic achievements and giving back to the community.
Nine members of the Mercer Island boys soccer team were given KingCo honors last week, being named to the All League teams.
For the third time the season Mount Si stopped Mercer Island, but it was the first time this year the Wildcats kept the Islanders from scoring a run. Mount Si defeated the Islanders 5-0 in the second round of the KingCo tournament on Thursday evening.
