Bellevue pushed Mercer Island as far as they could, but in the end the Islander prevailed to earn the No. 2 seed from District 2 going into next week’s state baseball tournament.
The Islanders beat Bellevue in the KingCo tournament championship game Friday night, 4-3 in eight innings.
The Islanders scored first, earning one run in the second inning, but Bellevue tied things up with a run of their own in the top of the third inning. In the top of the fourth Bellevue took control, eventually holding a 3-1 lead until the Islanders tied things again in the bottom of the fifth.
The score would remain tied for the next three innings, until the bottom of the eighth when Mike Potoshnik hit a double to left field to start the batting rotation. With Cameron Ogard at bat Potoshnik made it to third base and off a wild pitch made it home to give the Islanders the final win.
Mercer Island’s first state game will be Saturday, May 22 at 1 p.m. at Wheeler Field in Centralia against Sumner High School
