With some Mercer Island residents facing food insecurity due to the federal government disruption, the city’s Youth and Family Services (YFS) department will be distributing grocery store gift cards to those in need as part of its emergency assistance services.

Cards will be available from 1-5 p.m. on Nov. 24 and Dec. 8, 22, and 29 at the north entrance of the administrative building in Luther Burbank Park. People are asked to ring the doorbell upon their arrival.

Mercer Island residency is required to receive gift cards, and people should bring ID, utility bill or other government-issued documentation for staff to verify. For more information, including a list of available food resources both on and off the Island, visit the YFS website at https://www.mercerisland.gov/yfs/page/yfs-food-card-distribution

“This effort has been supported by generous donations from community members and the MIYFS Foundation,” the city said.

Residents can contribute by purchasing one or more QFC gift cards ($25 increments preferred) and placing them in the utility/YFS drop box in the city hall parking lot (9611 SE 36th St.), located on the opposite side of the parking row from the USPS mailbox.
