MIHS AP microeconomics classes support donation drive

Mercer Island High School (MIHS) teacher Anne Fillmore’s four AP microeconomics classes supported the MIHS Leadership Donation Drive for the Fall City Food Pantry.

The four classes each collected high-need items in a category, and then calculated, and fiercely debated, how to value the donations. It was a fabulous experience in how to apply our “consumer surplus” in generous and needed ways, and how items have both market and “utilitarian/satisfaction” values.

Overall, nearly $2,000 of canned tuna, chicken, peanut butter, jelly and non-perishable breakfast items were collected. The seventh period class finished in a sprint to the finish to “win” by soliciting $150 of Venmo donations directly to the food pantry in the final minutes of class.

In early December, seniors Anusha Zaveri and Maya Talby delivered the first carload of MIHS donations to the food pantry and were able to see distribution in action. These donations will be incredibly meaningful and make an impact on the pantry’s ability to support the East King County community with care, dignity and joy.
