Kyra’s Hope Foundation partnered with Bloodworks Northwest to host a community blood drive on April 18 to support local patients, including children currently undergoing cancer treatment who rely on transfusions to stay in the fight, according to the foundation. The event took place at the south end QFC parking lot. Kyra Gupta, a 12-year-old Mercer Island resident, passed away on Nov. 9, 2025, from a rare type of pediatric cancer called metastatic Ewing sarcoma. From left to right, Julie Hsieh, Gautam Kumar, Alka Kumari, Piyusha Pandya and Shaivi Pandya. “A heartfelt thank you to our incredible Mercer Island community — friends, parents and students — who showed up this past Saturday for the “Gift of Life” blood drive. Every unit collected represents a “tomorrow” for a child in treatment and a “second chance” for a family in crisis. Seeing the blood drive bus completely full was a powerful reminder that while we lost our Kyra five months ago, her light continues to shine through your kindness,” the foundation said. MI Robotics, Mercer Island High School’s First Robotics Champion (FRC) Team 5937, qualified for the 2026 FIRST Robotics World Championship by finishing in the top 16 of teams competing at the Pacific Northwest FIRST District Championship on April 11 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. The “Tough as Snails” squad will next compete against the top-tier robotics programs from around the globe. The world event will take place April 29 to May 2 in the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. “Seeing this team evolve from a group of individuals into a single, synchronized unit has been incredible,” said Michael Ketchum, the school’s robotics teacher and Team 5937 coach. “Their technical skill and business acumen got them here, but it’s their grit, their empathy for one another, and their refusal to quit when the math didn’t add up that makes me the most proud to stand beside them.” Photo courtesy of the Mercer Island School District
