Did you know that kids born in 2013 will be intelligent, proud and perceptive? This is according to the Chinese zodiac, which is based on the lunar calendar. But this is only true for children after Feb. 10 because the Lunar Year has a different New Year’s Day.

On Mercer Island, Able Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine Clinic is hosting an open house event to celebrate the Chinese New Year from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11. A Chinese lunch will be provided. The clinic is located at 2448 76th Ave. S.E., #212.

To celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Snake, the Chinatown-International District Business Improvement Area (CIDBIA) will be hosting its annual Lunar New Year celebration on Feb. 9 in the International District.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be held in the area around Hing Hay Park at 423 Maynard Avenue South.

The celebration will feature traditional lion and dragon dances, Japanese taiko drumming, a children’s parade, restaurant specials and more.

Many Chinatown restaurants will also feature special tasting menus exclusive to the Lunar New Year celebration.

Making another appearance will be the Northwest Asian Weekly and Seattle Chinese Post’s third annual children’s parade and contest. Organized by both newspapers and produced by CIDBIA, the parade will cover one city block, in front of the Northwest Asian Weekly’s office, from Hing Hay Park to South King Street. A portion of the parade will cross an elevated stage where parents will be able to take photos.

The parade will begin at 1:30 p.m.
