MI girls tennis edges Bellevue, claims second in KingCo

The Mercer Island girls tennis team claimed second place in the 2A/3A KingCo standings with a 4-3 meet win over Bellevue Tuesday at Bellevue High School.

The two teams had only suffered one meet loss in league competition heading into Tuesday’s match, with both falling to first-place Interlake earlier in the season. Sarah Sweet and Grace Bethards each picked up singles wins for the Islanders. Sweet won her matchup against Brooke Chang 6-1, 6-0 and Bethards defeated Sasha Williams 6-1, 6-2. Bellevue’s Paige Sorgen outlasted Sammy Sweet 7-5, 7-6, while Tessa Tapmongkol defeated Caroline Hamilton 6-2, 6-2.

Mercer Island took two of the three doubles matches. Miji Suhr and Claire Mansfield won over Shayna McDonald and Jane Silverstein 6-0, 6-4. Kimia Preston and Caroline Harkins beat Claire Johnson and Meredith Barry 6-4, 6-0. Bellevue’s Ally Du and Emily Huang earned the doubles win for the Wolverines, beating Fiona Brasfield and Chloe Gage 7-5, 6-4.

Mercer Island will finish its regular season with a nonconference match against Forest Ridge at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in Bellevue. Next Tuesday, the Islanders will begin the 3A KingCo tournament at Lake Washington High School.

MI baseball hammers Seattle Prep

Scoring 10 runs in the first two innings, the Mercer Island baseball team ran away with an 11-2 non-league win over Seattle Prep Tuesday at Island Crest Park.

The Islanders (17-3, 16-2 in KingCo) led 3-0 after the first inning and pulled away with seven more runs in the bottom of the second. Noah Hsue went 2-for-2 at the plate for Mercer Island. Harrison Goonewardene batted in three runs, while Alex Shanks and Sam Pugel each drove in two runs.

Mercer Island utilized its bullpen Tuesday, with five different pitchers seeing action. Sophomore Robert Weaver earned the win for the Islanders for his first of the year.

Mercer Island will begin the 3A KingCo tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bannerwood Park.

Islander boys lacrosse bounces back against Sammamish-Interlake

The Mercer Island boys lacrosse team bounced back from Friday’s loss to Issaquah with a dominant 18-2 victory over Sammamish-Interlake Tuesday night at Sammamish High School.

Johnny Van der Velden tallied four goals and five assists for the Islanders (12-4, 10-1), and Bernie Agress also scored four goals for Mercer Island. Ian LaCombe had four saves in the net.

Next up, Mercer Island hosts Lake Washington (8-6, 6-5) at 8 p.m. Friday at MIHS.
