Mercer Island girls tennis takes KingCo title; six advance to districts

All six members of the Mercer Island girls tennis team who participated in the KingCo tournament this week advanced to districts, which begins next Tuesday. The team won the KingCo title as well.

All six members of the Mercer Island girls tennis team who participated in the KingCo tournament this week advanced to districts, which began yesterday. The team won the KingCo title as well.

Freshman singles player Nora Tan beat Juanita’s Maria Jouravleva in the KingCo title match 6-3, 6-2 to win the title. Tan will be the No. 1 seed going into districts. Senior Ellie Rudee beat Liberty’s Amber Eastham 6-3, 6-0 in the consolation finals for third place. Rudee earned the No. 3 seed for districts.

In the doubles competition Anissa Bryant-Swift and Malia Lum of Sammamish beat Chelsea Bailey and Julia Schubach 6-3, 6-0 for the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds respectively. Mercer Island’s Kelly Crandall and Julia Zook beat London Lee and Sabrina Tu of Bellevue 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation finals for third place.

The Sea-King district competition begins next Tuesday, May 18 at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle. The top four will advance to the state tournament May 28-29 at the Vancouver Tennis Center in Vancouver, Wash.

The boys tennis district tournament will also take place this week. Mercer Island qualified Jordan Smith, Max Franklin, Andrew Smith, Matt Sedlacek and Jared Thomas to compete for spots at the state tournament.
