Twelve MIHS teams, organizations earn WIAA honors for academic achievement

Twelve Mercer Island High School teams and organizations have earned honors from the Washington State Interscholastic Activities Association for outstanding or distinguished academic achievement this year.

Twelve Mercer Island High School teams and organizations have earned honors from the Washington State Interscholastic Activities Association for outstanding or distinguished academic achievement this year.

The following teams were honored by the WIAA, earning the outstanding scholastic award for having a combined GPA of 3.5 or higher: varsity girls basketball, varsity boys swimming, varsity wrestling, varsity cheer, drama II, wind symphony and symphonic orchestra.

The following teams were recognized for earned the distinguished scholastic award for having a combined GPA of 3.0 to 3.49: jazz choir, forensics (debate), varsity boys basketball, varsity dance and drill and gymnastics.

The MIHS mock trial team also finished eighth out of 20 teams in the state competition. Senior Ryan Gorey, in a field of 300, was named the state tournament’s best attorney.

“It is wonderful to watch these students challenge themselves in their sports and activities, and in the classrooms,” said MIHS principal Vicki Puckett. “They display a tremendous work ethic and team spirit that makes us all proud.”
