For the last five years the Mercer Island boys tennis team has done well, making state appearances and winning big matches. But in all that time, they came just short of winning the SeaKing district title. The drought is over after the Islanders took the district title on Wednesday afternoon with 30 points. Second place went to Seattle Prep with 17 points.
After winning a stellar win at the district meet on Monday, the Mercer Island girls golf team are busy celebrating not only the district win, but the trip to next week’s state event.
After battling through a spring season of rain, delays and rescheduled games, the Islanders’ baseball season closed with a KingCo tournament loss to Lake Washington on Saturday.
Ten members of the Mercer Island track and field team will compete in this week’s District track competition following last week’s KingCo meet.
Athletes finishing in the top five at their event in the KingCo meet moved on to this Wednesday’s preliminary event.
For the third time the season Mount Si stopped Mercer Island, but it was the first time this year the Wildcats kept the Islanders from scoring a run. Mount Si defeated the Islanders 5-0 in the second round of the KingCo tournament on Thursday evening.
It wasn’t a pretty game, battled on the turf in pouring rain, and at the end of 80 minutes the season was over. Lake Washington beat Mercer Island during the KingCo tournament title match last Wednesday with a 1-0 final score.
The Mercer Island baseball team secured their spot in the second round of the KingCo tournament on Tuesday evening, thanks to a 10-1 victory over Liberty.
The Islanders will now face Mount Si on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats earned the league’s No. 1 seed going into the playoffs.
Prior to their Wednesday walk on Bainbridge Island last Wednesday, members of the Solemates walking group dropped off bags of food to be donated to the Mercer Island Food Pantry.
Matt Logie, a 1999 Mercer Island High School graduate, was chosen last week as the new men’s basketball head coach at Whitworth University.
Logie, who played basketball all four years at MIHS for his grandfather Ed Pepple, was previously the assistant head coach at his alma mater, Lehigh University, in Pennsylvania.
Competing against the top youth teams in the Pacific Northwest, Rain City Water Polo’s 14U squad went 5-1 and won last weekend’s Rose Cup Tournament in Beaverton, Ore.
Tuesday afternoon the Mercer Island girls tennis team celebrated not only their seniors, and their final home match of the regular season, but also the competition of a perfect league season.
With a win over Mount Si the Islanders completed a 7-0 league season, and earning the KingCo title.
The Mercer Island Community Fund has agreed to match $10,000 in funds to help save the fireworks show put on during Summer Celebration. The MICF will match any and all donations from the community or sponsors up to $10,000.
With Tuesday’s win over Bellevue, the Islanders edge just a little closer to securing their seeding for the KingCo 3A tournament next week.
